The Summer Camp is a sport-basedsociocultural and educational camp programme that provides young people from surrounding communities with opportunities to discover and practice different sports and develop their bodies, minds and wills in the Olympic spirit in a landscape where opportunities to attend summer sports camp are scarce.
The six-week, Monday to Saturday, summer sports camp is targeted at local youth ages 8-15 years. It aims to foster positive youth development, create access to organized sports and physical activities and to provide the foundations to gain fundamental values and skills.
In the morning time slot, the participants are initiated and trained on over a dozen sports (i.e. athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, football, handball, hockey, judo, rugby, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis and volleyball). The sports and physical activities practiced are adapted to the abilities and interests of the children.
Afternoons are reserved for two-hour sociocultural and educational workshops. Topics addressed range from values-based education (i.e. the values of Olympism and environmental and social responsibilities) to sociocultural education, health and life skill development. This time slot is also the opportunity for the children to experience artistic activities (i.e. dance, vocal techniques, theatre and music), arts & crafts (i.e. Baneco art, recuperation art, painting and crochet), initiation to informatics and recreative games for the younger groups (i.e. checkers and chess).
Breakfast and lunch are provided for all participants, which is often considered as a relief for the families.
By providing these activities and support, the Summer Camp gives the opportunity to local young people to:
improve their quality of life
engage in healthy life habits and practice different sports and physical activities
enhance their overall education
forge prosocial values and behaviors to develop themselves into fulfilled individuals and citizens
develop healthy relationships based on values such as respect of others, peace and tolerance and develop a sense of belonging among local children
As the Sport for Hope Centre in Haiti strongly believes in the power of sport and physical activity to enhance intellectual, cognitive and social development among youth, its approach combines these elements to maximize transversal development. Sport talent detection is also valued during the Summer Camp. For further information, please refer to the Multisport Academy Programme webpage.
Over the years, the Summer Camp has attracted a great deal of favourable attention from local communities as well as the international stage. Locally, it is perceived as an alternative space for the construction of positive life habits and a better future. Welcoming 555 local children to their first ever summer camp experience in 2014, the camp saw its number more than doubled in 2015 reaching 1345 young people from the surrounding communities.
